JOE BERMUDEZ
Nervous Nitelife: Mass Movement (Nervous Records)
By Justin Kleinfeld
New York City’s famed Nervous Records is in the midst of a resurgent period and the latest release in its popular Nervous Nitelife series comes from Boston-based DJ/Producer Joe Bermudez. The artist has been making a name for himself recently with a successful weekly radio show on XM radio and a cache of chart topping dance remixes for artists including Hilary Duff and Pussycat Dolls. Rather than put together a mix CD with the same tracks that have been making the rounds on other mix compilations, Bermudez fills his effort with loads of exclusives. The progressive mix starts on the pop-side with Bermudez & Preve’s own mix of Creamer & K and Lance Jordan’s “The Healing” and Chris Lake’s “Carry Me Away” (available only on this compilation in the United States.) The second half of the disc gets harder and dirtier with notable tracks including DJ Dan’s “Needle Damage (Macca remix),” Deadmau5’s “Faxing Berlin” (Chris Lake Edit)” and Bermudez’s own remixes of Hilary Duff’s “With Love” and Gabriel & Dresden’s “Closer.” The track selection and programming here is admirable and Bermudez does a nice job of both educating and entertaining with his mix. Although it’s often lost these days, that’s the mark of a good DJ, isn’t it?
